Retiro Park: History, Culture and How to Visit
Learn about Retiro Park's history and cultural significance, located near Adventure Hostel Madrid in the heart of Malasaña.
From Adventure Hostel, right in the heart of Gran Vía, we’re perfectly placed to help you discover the wonders of Madrid. Just a short walk away lies one of the city’s most significant landmarks: El Retiro Park. This expansive green space is far more than just a park; it’s a gateway to Madrid’s history, culture, and grandeur.
El Retiro Park, officially known as El Buen Retiro, was established in the 17th century as part of the gardens of the Palacio del Buen Retiro (Palace of the Good Retreat), which served as a residence for Spanish royalty. Originally exclusive to the monarchy, it’s now open to everyone, welcoming both locals and visitors to enjoy its splendour. Over the years, it has witnessed major historical and cultural events and was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.

Covering over 125 hectares, El Retiro is a natural haven inviting relaxation, exercise, and exploration. Strolling through its tree-lined avenues feels like stepping into another world, while its gardens, such as the Rosaleda (rose garden) or the Parterre Francés (French parterre), showcase a stunning variety of plants and flowers that captivate in every season.
